First Day!

Hello All!

In attempt to go a paperless as possible here is the syllabus for General Music. Students Grades 4th-8th should be prepared next week with a notebook, and a folder. Don't forget to vote for what you want to learn this year at the bottom of my blog. Looks like its gonna be another great year!

General Music Syllabus
Mr. Myers: Room 118

Objective: The Music curriculum of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is designed to broaden a student's general knowledge of basic musical skills and concepts at all levels of elementary education. Through participation in the music program, students are lead in a deeper appreciation of liturgy, ethnic cultures, and musical styles. Music holds a prominent place in the spectrum of Arts and is of paramount importance in the development of the whole child. –(Archdiocese of Philadelphia Curriculum Guidelines)

Class Structure: Each class will consist of exercises covering a variety of fundamental music elements including vocal and Instrumental performance, basic composition / improvisation, rhythmic movement, reading and writing music notation, Listening Skills, and finally demonstrating a basic knowledge of music history and culture.

Grading: Students grades will reflect their growth in each of the following categories
• Singing Alone and With Others
• Instrumental Performance
• Composition and Improvisation
• Movement
• Reading and Notation
• Listening Skills
• Integration / Evaluation
• Music History / Culture

Grading Break Down:
• Written Test 20%
• Performance 40%
• Class Participation 40%

***Weights may change at any time to at teacher’s discretion***

All grades will be able to be viewed online. Test will only be given once. Extra credit may be assigned to students who need it.

***** YOU MUST PARTICIPATE TO PASS ******

Final Thoughts: Music should be fun, if you are not enjoying yourself it is because you’re trying not to! My goal is to create and grow students understanding and interest in music. Music is a vital part of our culture, if we do not understand it we are missing out on what it means to be human.

Please view the Archdiocese of Philadelphia web site for the music curriculum.

  2. Excellent question Shannon. The history and culture portion is addressed more strongly in the last trimester of 8th grade. However, we will all be looking at how our culture influences the music that we listen to, as well as the composers who came before us that influence modern day song writers!
