iPad Project 1: Interfacing with MIDI instruments

Connecting your MIDI controller to the iPad is simple. Follow these steps EXACTLY as they appear and you will have no problems

1.) Unpack and locate all 4 components
-iPad, MIDI keyboard, USB cable, and Camera Connection Kit (CCK)

2.) Switch CCK to USB mode

3.) Plug CCK into iPad (note do not connect the keyboard to CCK before you plug it into iPad)

4.) Once CCK is plugged in bring iPad out of sleep mode

5.) Plug in MIDI keyboard. Red Power light should turn on! If it doesn't you have done something wrong!!!

Now that our MIDI controller is hooked up open Garage Band and create a new song using the + button

Adjust and Follow the metronome marking of 100 BPM (located in the settings area) and record your self playing a C major scale in Quarter Notes on the MIDI keyboard... YOU MUST FOLLOW THE BEAT!

Play back your recording in garage band to make sure you played in time.

Once your happy with your recording select alter the sound of your recording by assigning a NEW instrument sound to your already recorded C major scale
-this is done by taping the instrument in the center of the screen and choosing a new sound.

Now Loop your recording 3 times (you may have to adjust the length of your project in the settings menu.)

Once finished With your MIDI recording and Loop pass the keyboard to the next group.

You have now finished Creating your first MIDI based project!!!! use the remaining class time to build on your recording using the Apple Loops built into the iPad! You should have 1 MIDI track, and a minimum of 3 Apple loop tracks.
